Our aim is simple:
“Our carbon footprint should be minimal. To achieve this, nothing should be brought into the school apart from teaching materials and some food. The school should produce no waste.”
To achieve these lofty goals, the school must:
- Generate its own energy (electricity & gas)
- Use fuel efficient appliances
- Harvest and store rain water
- Grow food
- Compost any waste
The school has started along this path. There is a 50,000L water tank and rain water harvesting system. Electricity is generated by solar panels. All the electrical items are low energy items. The school kitchen uses low energy wood burning stoves.
With time, we will add composting toilets, more rainwater storage, solar hot water and a biogas generator for the kitchen stoves.
